The path was already mentioned in writings in the year 1217 (Saas Archive E1 from 1.7.1415). Coin finds in 1963 by mountain guide Albert Imseng (+ 12 Oct 1963) from the period around 324-500 BC prove that this crossing was already used in Roman times. After the opening of the military and trade route over the Simplon, the goods traffic came to a halt from 1805 onwards.
To shorten the long way to the Antronapass today, you can take the cable car from Saas-Almagell to Furggstalden. From there, the trail leads southeast over the Mäslaubgrabe to Chapf and further to Furggu. From there, you reach the old trade route in the valley bottom of the "Furggtälli" and follow the Schönboden, the Bitzbrunnen to the end of the valley to the Antronapass (Passo di Saas) at 2,838 m above sea level. From the pass, you have a wonderful view of the Antrona valley and the reservoir Lago di Cingino.
Transport
The Saastal is easy and convenient to reach by car from all directions, whether from within Switzerland or from abroad. From the north, you can reach us via Bern through the Lötschberg car shuttle. From the east, you come via the Furka Pass or the Furka car shuttle. From the south, we are accessible via the Simplon Pass or the Simplon car shuttle, and from the west, you drive via Lausanne along the Rhone valley to Visp and then towards Saas-Fee. From Visp, drive south towards Saas-Fee. At the "Killerhof" roundabout near Stalden, take the second exit to Saas-Fee. In Saas-Grund, turn left after the church towards Saas-Almagell.
