Description
A high-altitude hike amidst a magnificent glacier world is offered by this path between the Morenia station and the Britanniahütte.
The route leads over the alpine steppe area of Morenia to the Egginerjoch. There the trail turns right (in the walking direction) over the moraine ridge. Down in the scree area, the path leads past two lakes to a small rock ledge. Then you cross a branch of the Chessjengletscher and ascend to the Britanniahütte. From the hut (3,030 m above sea level) you enjoy an unforgettable view of the Allalin glacier and the Mattmark area with the namesake natural reservoir.
The Britanniahütte was built in 1912 and completely renovated in 1997. It is the most visited SAC hut in the Alps and the starting point of the Haute Route. The route mostly goes over glaciers and is therefore only passable with appropriate equipment.
Transport
The Saastal is easily and conveniently accessible by car from all directions, whether from Switzerland or abroad. From the north, you reach us via Bern through the Lötschberg car train. From the east, you come via the Furka Pass or the Furka car train. From the south, we are reachable via the Simplon Pass or Simplon car train, and from the west, you drive via Lausanne along the Rhone valley to Visp and from there towards Saas-Fee. From Visp, drive south towards Saas-Fee. At the 'Killerhof' roundabout near Stalden take the second exit towards Saas-Fee. In Saas-Grund, turn right after the church towards Saas-Fee.
