Description

Rocky and alpine in character, the ‘Dames Anglaises’ via ferrata is more like a secured climbing route than a leisurely via ferrata. The route requires a good understanding of high-altitude mountaineering and the correct techniques for navigating the rock face. There’s no need to worry, though, as the three English ladies are watching over the climbers…
The start of the Dames Anglaises via ferrata is about a 45-minute walk from the Pierredar mountain hut in Les Diablerets. It can be reached via the Prapio path (white-red-white) or the Drudy path (white-blue-white alpine route) in 3 to 4 hours. With a few kilometres to cover and a climb of nearly 1,000 metres to reach the start of the route, mountaineers often choose to head up to Pierredar the day before, to enjoy a convivial evening and spend the night at the refuge (booking required) before tackling the via ferrata. The route begins with fairly easy rocky sections, leading up to the silhouettes of the Dames Anglaises. These are in fact three rocks, whose shape resembles women in long dresses. Climbers then enjoy a breathtaking view of the Prapio Glacier. In the final section, the via ferrata becomes more exposed right up to the finish. At this altitude, the view over the Vaud Alps is breathtaking. The return journey can be made via the Glacier 3000 cable cars from the Scex Rouge summit station or on foot, via the Diablerets hut.
