Description
The valley route from Saas-Almagell to the Mattmark Dam is a beautiful, not too strenuous route that nevertheless leads into a remote area.
Shortly after Saas-Almagell, you reach the balancing reservoir of Mattmark AG where you will also find the Zer Meiggeru chapel. This chapel, originally built in 1707, was rebuilt and relocated in 1962 due to the construction of the balancing reservoir.
The path runs from Saas-Almagell towards Mattmark (south) initially mostly near the road. After the balancing reservoir, the path crosses to the left side of the valley (when looking uphill) and leads above the valley floor to the largest and heaviest natural dam in Europe. At the Mattmark restaurant, you can learn about the construction and the power production of the dam in the Mattmark exhibition. Along the entire length of the Mattmark dam, there is a history trail with information boards to discover. In front of the restaurant is the PostBus stop that takes you back to Saas-Almagell.
Transport
The Saastal is easily and conveniently accessible by car from all directions, whether from Switzerland or abroad. From the north, you can reach us via Bern through the Lötschberg car transport. From the east, you come via the Furka Pass or by the Furka car transport. From the south, we are reachable via the Simplon Pass or Simplon car transport, and from the west, you drive via Lausanne along the Rhone Valley to Visp and from there towards Saas-Fee. From Visp, drive south towards Saas-Fee. At the "Killerhof" roundabout near Stalden, take the second exit to Saas-Fee. In Saas-Grund, turn left after the church towards Saas-Almagell.
